Schreiner, Bruce. The Associated Press. “Patton museum to remain on grounds of Fort Knox.” Altoona Mirror [Altoona, PA] 26 Feb. 2006: D6. Print.
In Schrieners article he reports that the decision to keep the Patton museum at Fort Knox Kentucky has finally been made official to the public. This article explains how the Patton museum, which is presently located at Fort Knox Kentucky will be staying put and will not be accompanying the rest of the Army’s Armor Center to its new home at Fort Benning Georgia. The Patton museum which originally opened its doors in 1949 is a modern day attraction that houses many of the Army’s rare and historical objects, some of which include tank exhibits ranging from World War I all the way up to the Iraq war. The recently announced plan to keep the Patton museum at Fort Knox was met with approval from several different sources. Schreiner illustrates one of those sources when he states, “The decision, announced in December by a Kentucky congressman, was greeted with approval by a descendant of famed World War II Gen.” (2). This article reminds us all that many major historical buildings like the Patton museum should stay when they are regardless of the militaries base realignment program. It would be even more productive if a discussion was initiated that addressed all major historical buildings and landmarks that would be affected by present and future base realignments. This ongoing problem not just affects the buildings themselves, but in this case many of the other historical articles and exhibits that come along with a museum.
